Plastic pollution has been gaining awareness over the years, and people are becoming conscious about the plastic waste that they produced, especially single use disposable plastic. We are also trying to reduce our single use plastic waste, therefore we went on a mission to find the best reusable straws in the market for our own use. With many questions about our stainless steel straws, we have put together a summary so you can easily decide to make the switch from disposables to reusable.

Are Metal straws the same as Stainless Steels straws?

The short answer is no. Metals can rust, corrode and stain. Stainless steel is used to make most food grade containers and cutleries and they have added components that make them resistant to rust and corrosion. There are both metal and stainless steel straws sold in the market and we encourage you to choose the stainless steel ones because you do not want to replace the straws frequently.

What grades of Stainless Steels are there?

There are various grades of stainless steel used in the market, the most common ones are 18/8, 18/10, 304 and 316. 18/8 stainless steel comprises of 18% chromium and 8% nickel and is a broad term for 302, 303 or 304 stainless steel. 18/10 stainless steel comprises of 18% chromium and 10% nickel, the added nickel gives the stainless steel the silver shine and increase in rust resistance.

304 and 316 grade stainless steel are what is used to make our straws. 304 stainless steel is made from at least 18% chromium and 8% nickel, whereas 316 stainless steel is made from 18% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The addition of molybdnum is to help resist corrosion against chlorides, like sea water, hence it is often known as marine or medical grade.

Is there a taste difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

No, there is no taste difference between our SUS304 and SUS316L stainless steel straws. Our stainless steels are made from high quality Japanese stainless steel and have undergone rigorous lead test, acetic acid metal dissolution test and are certified by SGS certification. They are also tested negative for SGS radiation detection, which is critical for materials imported from Japan.

Why is there a price difference among all stainless steel straws in the market?

Quality of the materials and production costs determine to the price of a product. We cannot vouch for the quality of all stainless steel straws in the market, however our straws have SGS certification to ensure the highest quality and purity. Stainless steel have to be specially and carefully treated, otherwise it may leak toxic and dangerous substances and endanger your health. Our straws are treated and processed using medical methods and never made using recycled materials, so they are safe and sanitary. The inner and outer surfaces of the stainless steel straws have undergone electro polishing to remove unwanted materials as well as medically safe passivation to prevent corrosion (acid resistance). They have been ground and polished to allow for easy cleaning and the prevention of any adhesion, and sterilized at high temperatures to remove toxic materials.

Which straw should I pick – SUS304 or SUS316L?

Our SUS304 straws are food grade, while our SUS316L straws are medical grade. Both are deemed as safe and healthy for use with food and drinks. We do not recommend using these stainless steel straws with hot drinks or soups, but we have customers who purchased their straws from us with the intention of drinking hot beverages. When using with hot beverages, just be extremely careful, especially with children, in case of scalding.

We recommend using our SUS304 straws with coffee, tea, milk and juices and SUS316L with acidic drinks (such as lemon juices or vinegar), carbonated drinks and enzymes.

Do I need straw?

You may or may not need a straw, depending on your needs and habits. Ladies who wear lipsticks would prefer using a straw so their drinks do not mess up their lip colour. Some people with sensitive teeth will need a straw, others with a health condition may need a straw as well. If you do need a straw, please do not choose to use a single-use disposable plastic straw. These disposable straws create plastic pollution due to irresponsible dumping and it’s costing us our environment and beautiful Earth.

If your purpose of using a reusable stainless straw is to reduce waste, we strongly suggest that you pick a good quality straw. We like the idea of “buy once, use forever”, so we’re extremely happy to be using these straws that we stock.
